Envy

A whisper in shadows, a serpent coiled tight,
Envy rears its head, unbeknownst to sight.
A twisted desire, so deeply ingrained,
Born from comparing what we lack and gained.

The first glimpse of envy leaves us feeling small,
As others seem to possess it all.
Wishes turn to longing, hearts now filled with want,
Our own possessions no longer grant content.

Grass begins to look greener on the other side,
And we yearn for what they have and we can’t abide.
Envy consumes us like an insatiable fire,
We fail to see our blessings, wrapped in desire.

The sin of envy spreads its poisonous roots,
Corrupting the soul with bitterest boots.
Our eyes become jaded, blinded by disdain,
Failing to recognize the good within our domain.

We forge resentment towards those we once held dear,
As envy’s blade cuts deep and leaves us smeared.
Brother turns against brother, friend against friend,
The green-eyed monster shows no mercy in the end.

The victims of our envy feel our wrath and scorn,
But we take no heed to the pain we’ve borne.
We justify our actions, claiming they deserved it all,
While slowly losing the essence of who we truly are.

The path of envy leads us down a lonely trail,
Our hearts grow colder with each jealous wail.
Alone and consumed, we bear this heavy load,
Searching for solace, nowhere to go.

For the price of envy is a heavy one indeed,
As we reap what we’ve sown in our deeds.
The relationships we destroy, the friendships lost,
The life we could have lived at such great cost.

But there lies hope for those willing to turn,
From envy’s grip and learn anew how to yearn.
Embrace gratitude and cherish what you own,
For joy awaits in the simple act of letting go.
